Visiting an audiologist for the first time can be incredibly exciting – or stressful – depending what you do to prepare for your appointment. When it comes to visiting a medical professional for the first time, there are several different things you can do to put your mind at ease. For starters, consider jotting down any questions you may have about your upcoming appointment, including the following four:

1. What do you need to bring?

This is a pretty basic question, but it can really help you gather all the important information you need to provide the audiologist with – which also means you’ll get the most out of that first appointment by being prepared! Most audiologists recommend bringing your insurance card (if hearing testing is covered by your insurance provider), a referral from a doctor (if one is needed for insurance purposes), a detailed list of your medical background and the names of any and all medications you’re taking. Your audiologist wants to paint a complete picture of your hearing health and that includes your medical background.

2. How will they test your hearing?

There are a number of different methods used to test your hearing ability. Depending on your medical history, symptoms and abilities, your audiologist may run one or a handful of tests to get to the bottom of your issues. The good news is all of these tests are non-invasive, pain-free and won’t take a long time to conduct. Talk more with your audiologist about what tests they prefer and what you can expect during each of them.

3. What happens if you have hearing loss?

If the hearing tests reveal you are suffering from hearing loss, your audiologist will discuss these results in detail with you. They will use an audiogram to show you what pitches and frequencies you’re having the most trouble with and then they will make a recommendation on how to combat these issues. Hearing aids are the most common treatment available for hearing loss and your audiologist will be able to walk you through the next steps.

4. What happens if I need hearing aids?

Most individuals with hearing loss can benefit from the use of hearing aids. These devices do not “restore” your hearing; however, instead, they help appropriately amplify the sounds you may be struggling with. There are a number of hearing aid styles available and your audiologist will be able to help you make the right selection based on your lifestyle, hearing loss and budget needs. Additionally, your audiologist won’t pressure you into selecting a device that isn’t right for you, so don’t be afraid to speak up and ask questions about hearing aids.

With a little preparation, your first visit to the audiologist can be informational and stress-free. Don’t hesitate to contact your audiologist with any additional questions or concerns you may have.
