Since they were invented, hearing aids have undergone many drastic changes and innovations. Different devices have lots of different features, some of which are more advanced than we’ve ever seen before. Today, we’re going over some of the most advanced features you’ll find in modern-day hearing aids, starting with:

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

That’s right, there is AI in some hearing aids on the market right now. AI works by letting wearers create different settings for different environments. The technology is able to detect when a new environment is entered, automatically altering the settings. In theory, someone can walk into a busy place with lots of people and their hearing aids will instantly change the settings to ensure they can hear comfortably. This tech is still new, so we have no idea just how far it can be pushed in the future!

Remote Control Apps

In the past, hearing aids were difficult to tweak and control. Many people would have to visit their hearing health professional whenever they wanted to change different settings on their device. Now advanced hearing aids come with smartphone apps that pair to the device. It allows them to change everything about the hearing aid – from the volume to various other things. A very advanced feature of these apps can sometimes allow hearing aids to translate different languages as they are spoken.

Bluetooth

Bluetooth has been brought to hearing aids to let them connect to other Bluetooth devices. Essentially, you can connect your hearing aids to your phone or TV. From here, sounds from those devices will be played directly through your hearing aids. They’ll function like Bluetooth earphones, but with the benefit of hearing aid technology processing the sounds so they’re clear for you to hear.

Directional Microphones

However, they still remain one of the most advanced features you can have in a device. The premise behind a directional microphone system is that it boosts sounds coming from in front of you while dampening sounds from other directions. As such, it helps you understand people when they’re talking to you. You face the speaker, and their voice is picked up and amplified while background noises are quietened down.

Often, this technology is combined with digital noise reduction that detects unwanted sounds and reduces their level. As hearing aids have become more advanced, the technology behind both of these features has been refined and made even better.

Remember, these are just a handful of the features you can find in modern hearing aids. The biggest question you should be asking is what features do you need? Book a consultation with a hearing health professional to learn more about your hearing loss, which will help you understand what features are essential for your hearing aid and which features you may not need.
