Your custom-made earmold impression has now returned and in the form of a custom-made earmold. This is amazing, but before you can take it home you need to go in for your earmold fitting. Why you may ask? Because you and your audiologist need to ensure that the earmold fits you properly and is comfortable. So let’s go over what you can expect during your earmold fitting appointment.

  • Viewing: When you first go in for your appointment you will view your earmold. You and your audiologist will go over the look the earmold and make sure that it what was ordered.
  • Care: Next you and your audiologist will go over the care of your custom-made earmold. Now it should be noted that each type of earmold that is made to order will need different care. For example, custom-made earplugs can be washed with soap and water while custom-made hearing aid earmolds cannot be submerged in water they instead need to be wiped down daily and cleaned with a special pick and brush tool your audiologist will give you. So be sure to listen closely to your audiologist on how to properly care and clean your custom-made earmold because with proper care and cleaning your custom made earmold will last a long time.
  • Fitting: Now you will try on your custom-made earmold. First your audiologist will put in and take out your custom mold to show you how to properly and safely put in and take out your earmold. Next you will do the same thing. Once you have it in your ear your audiologist will ask you to talk and move your jaw around to see how the fit is. They will check the fit on the outer part of the ear as well. Be sure to tell your audiologist if there is any discomfort or sound escaping or loose fitting, tell them any and everything that you feel during your fitting to ensure that you have the best fit possible.
  • Adjustment: Adjustments may need to be made to the earmold depending on how the fit is in your ear. Most of these adjustments can be made in house by your audiologist; some however, will need to be sent out.

Once the earmold fitting is complete your audiologist will likely want to see you in about a weeks’ time to ensure that your custom-made earmold is fitting and working properly to your needs.
