You have an elderly relative who has hearing loss; maybe it’s your mom, your dad or an aunt or uncle or grandparent. You know they have hearing loss but may have a problem with mobility and/or transportation so you have decided to take it upon yourself to help. This can seem like a large task to take on but with the right help it will be easy for not only you but for them as well. Here are a few ideas to help you on your journey.

  • Search for an audiologist. When finding an audiologist for your elderly relative you need to consider a few things. Where are they located? Is it easy for you to get to? Is it easy for your relative to get to? What are their hours of operation? Do they make house calls? Do they have experience with working with the elderly? What are their costs?
  • Location, location, location. Location is very important when considering which audiologist you go with. Their location to you and/or your elderly relative is important for ease and convenience. Try to find one that is near your relatives home, your home, your work or school to make it easier when scheduling appointments.
  • Hours of operation. Check into their hours of operation. Will they work with your schedule and your relative’s schedule? This is important for all appointments now and in the future.
  • Costs. Costs are a large factor when it comes to the elderly as they live on a fixed income. You want to make sure that the audiologist knows and understands the budget and lives within these means when booking appointments and the cost of hearing aids and repairs.
  • Experience. Experience with working with the elderly is important. Not everyone is patient and understanding when it comes to the needs of the elderly. Also not all audiologists understand the dexterity issues and confusion that may be associated with hearing aids and the elderly. Be sure to find an audiologist who is understanding, accepting and willing to help you and your relative in your plight.

Finding a good audiologist for your elderly relative can be trying but once found can be amazing and a huge relief. Be sure to ask as many questions as you need to so that you know and understand as does the audiologist what it you require from them for your relative.
