Wearing a hearing aid can make a huge difference in your life. If you’ve experienced hearing loss for an extended period of time, it can feel upsetting. But with the help of hearing aids, you can start to enjoy all of the things you used to. If you’re going to introduce a hearing aid into your life, it’s important for you to know exactly how to care for it. When you’re investing in such a great product that can quite literally change your life, you’ll want it to stay in good shape. One thing that can affect this is the batteries that you’re using – especially if you’re not taking good care of them. And so, you’ll want to make sure that you’re caring for your hearing aid batteries, not only to make them last longer but to ensure that your hearing aids are operating correctly too.

Now, you will be able to get important information from your audiologist on the specific hearing aid that you use. However, here’s some general information that can apply to most hearing aids, to help you care for the batteries better.

How long they should last

The first thing you might like to understand is how long they last – just to be sure that you’re doing things right. This could be anywhere from three to 22 days. It will depend on the hearing aid you have, how often you use it, the type of battery and the capacity of the battery.

When to change them

Most of the time, your battery will tell you that it’s getting low by beeping. If not, you may need to change it when the sound seems off, or you have to keep turning up the volume. It’s normal for batteries to just lose power, so always carry spares with you.

How to extend their life

One of the best things you can do to make sure that your batteries last as long as possible, is to make sure that you turn off your hearing aids and open the battery door when you’re not using it. This helps to stop excessive battery drain. If you won’t be using the hearing aid, then removing the battery entirely is a good idea.

When you first open a new battery, as soon as you take the tab off, let it sit for a while. Around three to five minutes should be sufficient. Then, install it into your hearing aid. See this as activating the battery.

How to store them

Finally, if you want to make sure that you’re caring for your hearing aids in the best possible way, then it’s important to make sure that they are being stored correctly. When you’re not using your hearing aid, here’s how to make sure that the battery is being cared for;

  • Open the battery door overnight (as well as when you’re not using the hearing aid).
  • Use a hearing aid dehumidifier to take the moisture out of the hearing aid and prolong battery life.
  • Store them in a cool dry place when you’re not using them.

Also be sure to wash your hands before changing the batteries, as dirt and grease can affect the battery performance. And remember, your audiologist can give you more personalized information about the kind of hearing aid you’re using.
