Did you know that over 36 million Americans suffer from some level of hearing loss? Quite a few are likely in denial about it and only 1/5 of individuals who would benefit from help are actually receiving it.

Unfortunately, hearing loss is often a condition that comes along with aging. This does not necessarily mean that just the elderly suffer from it. Factors such as listening to iPods on loud volumes, working with power tools, working at noisy workplaces and attending rock concerts all add up over time and cause hearing loss. Therefore, losing some degree of hearing early in adulthood is common.

Other conditions can contribute to hearing loss as well, such as diabetes, smoking, and heart diseases. Damage is usually gradual and many people don’t really notice it occurring. The best way to stay aware of what is going on is to know the most common warning signs of hearing loss.

1. Kids and women need to “speak up”

Sounds that are higher in pitch are usually the first that are unable to be heard easily. This is because they are detected by the external part of the ear’s cochlea. This is also the part of the ear that is most prone to damage.

Children and women can be more difficult to understand for a person with hearing issues because they typically have higher voices than men. This is a sign that is often brushed off because it takes a long time to even realize it.

2. Unsure where a sound is originating

If someone begins to talk, a person with great hearing will know where the speaker is in the room. Naturally, a person with good hearing will be able to easily determine where a bird or some other noise is coming from. However, for those who suffer from hearing loss, the ability to localize sounds is impaired. Patients have to search for visual clues to determine where the voice or sound is coming from.

3. Being frequently asked to turn the television down

If someone is listening to the TV louder than others like to, this could be a sign indicating hearing loss. Most people will set the TV at a comfortable, easy to hear volume. However, if someone is a better hearer than the other person the volume will likely seem too loud for the person with normal hearing.

4. Complaints from others that they have to constantly repeat themselves

If a person is constantly begging for clarifications or repetition when speaking with someone, then there is a good chance the person is suffering from hearing issues. Even if the actual person does not realize the issue, relatives and friends likely will. Take note if someone says they have to repeat themselves all the time since this is a telltale sign of a hearing issue.

5. Avoiding certain places or activities

People who have issues hearing will often find that their world gets much smaller due to the embarrassment and frustration of not being able to follow along during a conversation. Avoiding a place because of hearing concerns is a clear indication of a problem.

Being aware of the most common signs of hearing loss can help a person take action if they see them. These signs may not always be clear, so be sure to pay attention to what is going on and if hearing loss is truly a concern.
